Yelverton vs Whitchurch
WHITCHURCH recorded a convincing victory over Yelverton in Saturday's Tamar League match thanks mainly to fine innings of 74 by opener Peter Freedman.
Batting first, Whitchurch were soon in trouble with Ewen Rae and Richard Hall both dismissed cheaply and runs hard to come by from some consistently accurate bowling by Stewart, Carter and Day.
Freedman and Ian Gray batted cautiously and at the halfway point the Whitchurch score had only reached 40 from 20 overs.
Gray was out soon after, trying to force the pace but Freedman continued to bat on, defending well and punishing the occasional bad ball. With support from Neil Folley (13) and a rapid 26 from Steve Woods he took Whitchurch into a strong position before being caught in the deep for 74. The Whitchurch innings closed at 145 for 7 from 40 overs.
The Yelverton innings got off to a bad start with Gregory dismissed in the first over, an excellent diving catch by keeper Richie Freedman off the bowling of Tom Ingram.
Loze was out in Ingram's next over, this time a fine one-handed catch by the bowler. Things then went from bad to worse and soon Yelverton found themselves at 16 for 6, with Ingram (3 for 19) and Kit Reeve (3 for 13) sharing the wickets.
Yelverton never recovered from this start and with Stewart (10) the only batsman to reach double figures, they were all out for 54 in the 27th over. The Whitchurch fielding showed a marked improvement over last week with catches by Peter Freedman and Andy Alford and a second for keeper Richie Freedman. Alford (2 for 7), Woods (1 for 8) and Neil Tamblin (1 for 6) were the other successful bowlers.
Whitchurch took 18 points, Yelverton 3 points.
