PEOPLE with Asperger Syndrome, who want to socialise with others, are being invited to attend a local support group in Tavistock, with interested people to set up a similar group in the Okehampton area.
The National Autistic Society Tavistock and District Asperger Group was formed in 2013 to provide a social and support network for adults with or waiting for a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome (AS) and their carers.
The group of volunteers joined together with the aim of helping each other so that they feel less isolated in society, can share experiences and offer coping strategy suggestions as well as swap resources like books and DVDs. There is also a monthly meeting especially to support parents and carers where possible.
The small but vital support group is thriving, with three regular sessions being held in Tavistock. The group’s wider area includes Okehampton and, if the group receives sufficient interest, its plan is to set up a new, regular session there as well.
Chair of the group Wendy West said: ‘In 2013 we were just a small group of women who had AS who met once a month for a coffee and mutual support. I never imagined we would grow so big.
‘We now have AS men and carers belonging to Tavistock and District Asperger Group (TAD) as well. There are three or four different meetings a month now, plus email support for those unable to attend meetings.
‘Much of this would not have been possible without the support of the National Autistic Society, Tesco Tavistock, the landlady of The Union Inn, Tavistock Library and The Art Side Printers in Plymouth, among others.
‘Since the beginning, our meetings have been about supporting those with AS who live in West Devon and the surrounding areas. The committee are all volunteers who give their time and experience freely. Due to the dedication of our volunteers, we are now planning to expand further and accept new members.’
Group secretary Alan Thompson said: ‘Our Christmas meeting is particularly popular with about 25 adults attending. For some of our members this is the only Christmas activity they feel able to attend.
‘When my family moved to Okehampton three years ago, my eldest daughter left her small network of AS friends behind and became very isolated.
‘Last summer, I attended a forum held by Okehampton United Charities in the Charter Hall for carers of those with autism. One of the organisers suggested I set up a local group but, at the time, I had no experience.
‘Instead, we joined Tavistock Aspergers Group and benefited from the sharing of experience and information — but my daughter is still the only member from Okehampton.
‘The committee agree it is time to see if other adults with AS in the surrounding area might find a monthly social group of interest so we intend to meet in the Ockment Centre one afternoon from 2pm to 4pm, starting in March.’
Alan said the important thing was for everyone who attends the meetings to feel completely safe and for this reason, the exact details of the meeting will only be given to those who contact the group first — either by email, text or answer phone message.
A relative, friend or carer can do this on behalf of anyone wanting to attend. They will also be welcome to attend the first meeting with people wishing to go. Future meetings will normally be just for adults with AS to socialise together with no need to join in and chat until they feel able. There will be refreshments provided.
Alan added: ‘We realise that meeting up with other people can be very stressful and do not under-estimate the effort needed to come at all. You will have a chance to let us know if, how or when we should hold the April meeting. That way, it will hopefully evolve into something that works for the majority of you.
‘The Ockment Centre is really convenient in the centre of Okehampton, and let us use a nice quiet room and also has a tranquil garden right next to the river.’
