SPEAKERS will be urging people to ?think global, buy local? at a meeting on the benefits of local food in Hatherleigh tonight (Thursday.)

Friends of the Earth Regional Co-ordinator Mike Birkin will talk about the environmental costs of buying food that has been transported long distances at the WestDEN meeting at Hatherleigh Bowling Club to which all members of the public are welcome to attend.

Also speaking will be local organic food producer and marketing consultant Russell Stevens, who will talk about his experiences of organic farming, marketing local produce and the benefits of buying local.

Russell and his family have recently taken over a 50-acre farm near Whiddon Down, Okehampton, where they have created a commercial kitchen to turn their own and locally sourced ingredients into tasty treats such as pies and puddings.

Through his passion for local food and marketing expertise he has helped raise awareness and get local produce back into restaurants, shops and pubs throughout the West Country.

The meeting begins at 7pm, refreshments will be served and there will be a stall selling fairly traded products.
