With five first team players missing and club captain, Carter, playing in goal, this fixture was always going to be a struggle against the league leaders. Tavistock showed plenty of team spirit and inside the first ten minutes, neat passing between Rowe and Bone led to a powerful shot by Cole that the Kitto keeper could only parry into the net. This was soon followed up by Tugwell finishing well from a through ball by Barriball, putting Tavy 2-0 up. But Tavistock let slip the advantage and were 3-2 down at half time. It could have been worse if not for the outstanding display by ?man of the match? from goalkeeper Carter. There were hardly any good chances created in the second half by either team but with ten minutes left a quick interchange of passes between the tireless Rowe, and midfielder Shalgosky lead to Rowe being fouled just outside the box. Barriball stepped up to thumped the free kick in off the cross bar. The match went into extra time and the tiredness began to show in the Tavy legs as Kitto again took the lead. With time running out in the second half of extra time, Tavistock threw caution to the wind. Kitto With only seconds left, Tavy forced another corner and after three blocked shots, Rowe bundled the ball over the line to take the game to penalties. With Carter saving two penalties and one going over the bar, it was left to Cole, Shalgosky and Tugwell to score the penalties which took Tavistock through. Although Carter was voted by Kitto?s manager as man of ther match all 11 players were magnificent in a true team performance.
