VISITORS to Tavistock Pannier Market will get a chance to see a model of the stained glass peace window planners said could not be installed in a village school.
The window has been the subject of controversy following a decision by West Devon Council to refuse its installation in a window at Milton Abbot school.
People will be able to see for themselves what all the fuss is about on the next two Sundays when the window will go on display in the pannier market. They will also be able to donate to a fundraising appeal for the work of art.
The colourful window, made by a Benedectine monk, is meant to symbolise world peace, and is part of an international project involving many schools.
The peace window will be on display in the pannier market on Sunday, December 15 and Sunday, December 22.
Since the window fundraising appeal was launched at Milton Abbot school a fortnight ago, around half the £4,000 needed for it has been raised.
The planning committee last month rejected the school?s proposed installation of the window in the lower half of the school hall window, as it would be ?detrimental to the character? of the Grade II listed building.
Headteacher Peter Jones last week told the Times the school was planning to appeal against the planners? decision.
Mr Jones said the school had a number of fundraising ideas in the pipeline. Parent Jenny Hale has offered to make a raku swan with a special peace inscription on it ? raku is a Japanese word for the type of firing used in a pottery kiln to produce her ceramic animal works. Another parent, Mike Hunting, is also planning a long-distance sponsored cycle ride next year to raise money for the appeal.
