MORE than 60 people gathered for an hour in Tavistock's Bedford Square last Saturday to demonstrate opposition to the war in Afghanistan and to highlight the humanitarian crisis in that country.
Protesters stood in a long line holding posters with peace messages such as Ghandi's famous 'An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind'.
Signatures were collected on a petition calling for the Government to stop military action in Afghanistan and to do whatever it can to ensure food aid gets through to people in need before mid-November when conditions will make overland access impossible.
The protest was organised by Tavistock Peace Action Group.
Co-ordinator Martin Mowforth said they were delighted with the support they received.
'People of all persuasions spoke to us of their disquiet about the way the USA and UK governments are putting retaliation above the humanitarian needs of millions of innocent Afghans,' he said.
'We were also encouraged to know that similar demonstrations were taking place in cities and towns across Britain and throughout the world.
'Our politicians must be made to listen to the aid agencies which are trying to deliver food to the hungry, who have made it clear the war is preventing them from getting supplies to the towns and villages, which now have little or no food reserves to see them through the winter.'
The group will meet to discuss plans on Tuesday, October 30, at 7.30pm in the Friends' Meeting House and says anyone interested is welcome to attend.
