MAY I comment on two very related points on Remembrance Sunday. The weather was kind, the sun shone, the air was warm. More people attended the service of Remembrance in Tavistock this year than I had ever seen before. Particularly noticeable was the large number of the younger generation, perhaps motivated by the troubles across the world today. But all who attended, the young and the not so young, were there to pay homage, thanksgiving and sorrow to the many thousands of young men and women who had paid the ultimate price in the cause of justice and freedom, fallen in the cause of the free. Thanks to the usual individuals and organisations who made a significant contribution to the success of the day: Preb John Rawlings and the Rev Jeff Moules, who conducted the service, Robbie and Rosemary Dobbie who provided the order of service, John Collacott who provided the PA system, the town council, West Devon Borough Council and the police, who co-operated fully with the organisation of the day, Stannary Brass Band who again turned in an excellent performance, finally but not least, all who attended the service. From the RBLI a most sincere thank you. In response to ?Wear Your Poppy with Pride? by Emma Lewis (Letters, November 3) perhaps she is not aware that Pall Mall ? headquarters of the RBLI ? have decided that poppies cannot go on sale until after October 29. I can assure her that by November 2 the Poppy Appeal organiser, Mrs Sheila Allen, and her small but dedicated band of volunteers, had distributed 120 boxes of poppies containing over 14,000 poppies and 45 wreaths within a one-mile radius of the town centre. These volunteers have jobs to follow and cannot always get to outlets during their hours of business. Perhaps next year Emma Lewis might like to help distribute these poppies, thereby increasing the number of volunteers by 20%. Jack May Branch Secretary Tavistock RBL
