IMPROVEMENTS to services to West Devon residents could be in the pipeline, following a new partnership agreement. The closer partnership arrangement between West Devon Borough Council, Teignbridge and South Hams district councils is a positive approach to the financial pressures on district councils who, for the foreseeable future, will not be adequately funded by central government. West Devon faces unique issues in the borough with high house prices yet below average wage levels and the council strives to keep costs as low as possible for its residents while consistently trying to improve its services. The council?s decision will mean that the authority will have a closer partnership arrangement with its two neighbouring authorities to include sharing best practice and back office tasks in some services. The three councils already work together as partners on many issues such as building control and community safety. Cllr James McInnes, leader of the council, said: ?West Devon is committed to delivering low cost high quality services to our residents and this partnership will enable us to continue that good work despite increasing financial pressures from central government. ?This new approach is sure to bring about a large number of potential benefits, including the possibility of significant cost savings and opportunities for staff.? Cllr Margaret Garton, deputy leader, added: ?Residents have this year voted West Devon as one of the best places to live in the country and they value the services we provide. ?The way to maintain these services is by taking a business-like approach and we feel that further partnership working will help to protect and improve these services.? A joint steering group between the three authorities has been set up to drive the partnership forward for the next three years.
