PARENTS and children have been learning together in innovative sessions held at Bere Alston Primary School. Family learning sessions at the school aimed to teach parents about the methods used in education today and to show them how they can help their child with school work to help enrich their education. The sessions were led by family learning tutor Michelle Bull with assistance from reception teachers Alison Kerswill and Julie Warren. They included information on how parents can help their children with reading, healthy eating, how to develop numeracy skills, a musical workshop and computer skills. Children and parents alike were treated to a Christmas show presented by a puppet theatre at the end of the day. Family learning tutor Michelle Bull said: ?The sessions involved parents gaining a greater understanding about their child?s education. Resources have been made available to them in order to aid their child?s continuing education, thus complementing what is being taught at school. ?Parents and children joined together for group activities, allowing a great opportunity for the parents to be working with their child. ?All parents received a certificate of attendance and those who wanted to, took up the chance to take a literacy accreditation.? Parent Jo Fiander said: ?It was a fantastic way to educate parents about how they can help develop their child?s education through play.? Another parent, Sophie Ewell, said the day had shown her how her child is taught at school and what she can do to help continue the learning at home. The family learning courses, run by Devon County Council, are free. Sessions are held in pre-schools, primary schools, children?s centres, libraries and secondary schools.
