A Dentist from Tavistock has been announced as one of six finalists for the National Smile Awards 2012.
Dr John Patrick McVeigh, from Abbey Mead Dental Practice and Implant Centre, in Plymouth Road, is the only South West dentist to have been selected and is up against dentists from London, Ireland, Sunderland, Wiltshire and Birmingham.
Paddy, as he is affectionately known by friends and family, and other dental practices in the UK are now gearing up to celebrate 'the best in the profession' at the only dental awards in the UK to reward clinical excellence in dental and facial aesthetics.
Paddy has been shortlisted for the 'Single dental implant' smile category.
For the replacement of missing teeth, dental implants are often the best and least destructive option. However, there are many challenges to be addressed along the way with such treatments.
In this category the judges are looking for excellence in replacing one or two missing teeth. The perfect replacement should mimic the natural tooth in every way. This means not only the appearance of the crown but the gingival tissues around it and between the adjacent teeth.
The independent panel of judges consists of renowned names in the dental and facial sector. It is chaired by Dr Christopher Orr, one of the UK's most prominent cosmetic dentists.
Paddy said: 'I am delighted to have been shortlisted and am looking forward to attending the ceremony.'
Paddy's wife, Ann Cummins, also a dentist, said: 'I am very proud of him and this recognition of his clinical skills. He deserves it because of his dedication to continuing professional development above and beyond what is required.'
The Smile Awards ceremony will be held on Friday March 23, in the five-star Landmark Hotel, a Grande Dame hotel in Central London.
