Torrington 8 Tavistock 36 TAVISTOCK progressed to the third round of the Powergen Junior Vase by overcoming Torrington from Devon League One. Tavistock playing in the higher Cornwall and Devon League were expected to progress and did so, eventually running Torrington all over the pitch at the end. Tavistock opened the scoring midway through the first half. Skipper Duncan Law made a break down the left and his pass allowed wing Phil Allen to run in the try from the half way line. Neil Evans added the conversion. Torrington got back into the game with a penalty from Manning and after a mix up in defence Tavistock gave away a penalty and Torrington skipper John Collings dived over. Soon after conceding the lead Tavistock were reduced to fourteen men when Darren Cole was sent to the sin bin for ten minutes after the referee had harshly judged that he had not released the ball in the tackle. Despite the temporary reduction Tavistock regained the lead deep in first half injury with a try from fly half Neil Evans. Almost at the start of the second half Tavistock increased their lead when scrum half Lee Greatrex ran through. Evans added the conversion. Tavistock then had to absorb a period of pressure when Torrington threw everything at them in an attempt to get back into the game. The Tavistock defence, superbly led by Paul Greehhill stood firm. After weathering the storm Tavistock made the game safe with a try from right wing Ben Neal. The ball was won at a line out and the ball was moved right via Josh Sutton and Duncan Law to Neil Evans whose pass allowed Ben the space to use his pace to power over for a try. Tavistock wrapped things up in the last ten minutes when their superior speed and fitness told. A second try was scored by Neil Evans and one from skipper Duncan Law. Josh Sutton converting the second of those scores. This weekend Tavistock entertain Old Plymothians at Sandy Park in a Cornwall and Devon League fixture. Kick off 3pm.
