HATHERLEGH's Christmas lights were switched on by the town mayor, Graham Alford, town crier Roz Chard and carnival queen Claire Munn on Monday evening, signalling the beginning of the festive season.

The event was accompanied by splendid music from Hatherleigh silver band, who are currently engaged in a busy programme of events around the area, and a late night shopping bonanza including festive refreshments for bargain hunters.
