WHAT a delight it was to see — and hear — 49 town criers in Tavistock over the carnival weekend.

They were a pleasure to talk to and their presence in the carnival procession enhanced that event which, hopefully, is on the up after the problems created by matters of insurance a few years ago.

Bob Rose, Tavistock's town crier, must be very proud of what he, and those who helped him, achieved and he deserves the thanks and congratulations of us all.

The praise that the criers and their ladies had for the reception that they received in the town was music to the ear.

CONGRATULATONS to those responsible for arranging the recent Town Criers' competition in the town.

It was wonderful to see and hear the criers during the week — especially those who stood outside various shops regaling us to enter and buy the goods inside — and their sense of humour and enthusiasm was an example to us all.

An enjoyable experience that I hope will be repeated in the future.
