A RUN down pavilion in East Cornwall will be getting a long overdue facelift thanks to dedicated fundraising and a welcome cash boost.
Members of Stoke Climsland Sports and Social club were pleased to receive a £10,000 Awards for All grant to help towards the refurbishment of their tired-looking pavilion.
The volunteer-led club has two premises, the clubhouse in the village and the pavilion in the recreation field.
The pavilion was given a new roof nearly two years ago, due to funding from members and contributions from Cornwall Council and Stoke Climsland Parish Council, but now the rest of the building needs refurbishing and updating.
Members have raised most of the cash needed for the refurb themselves but the Lottery grant, along with a £1,000 donation from the parish council and funds raised by members, as well as the donation of a kitchen from Howdens Joinery, paint from Brewers Paint and flooring from Tiflex, means the refurbishment can now get underway. Members hope the project will be finished by the summer.
Jenny Turner, deputy treasurer for the club, said: 'The club is run entirely by volunteers and is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Since we installed the new roof on the pavilion we have been raising funds to do the rest. Thanks to the grants from the Lottery and the parish council, the donations of goods and the rest of the funds from club members, we can now get started.
'At the moment it is in very poor condition — it has been deteriorating gradually. This has been a project that we have been talking about for years and it is great that now we can get on and do it.'
The refurbishment will include a new kitchen, new windows, doors, security shutters, electrics, paintwork, flooring and other updates and club members will be getting involved and helping out as much as they can.
Jenny said the pavilion is used a lot for outside social events by the community and said that after the refurbishment, they hope this will continue.
'We are hoping to have it finished by the summer and we're planning an official opening music event — similar to ones we have held before.'
