FOUR West Devon students were highlighted as 'outstanding' at City College Plymouth's annual awards ceremony.

The West Devon award winners were Sarah Chapman, Grant Yates, Christopher Hemmings and Harry Sharp.

Sarah Chapman, 18, from Gunnislake, won the Academy of Hospitality Work-based Skills Student of the Year award. She has achieved great success during her apprenticeship, with employment firstly at the Horn of Plenty and now at Gorton's in Tavistock.

At the college, Sarah has been an inspirational team member while on the professional cookery course. Despite her young age, she displayed a level of maturity and professionalism both in her employment and at the college.

This year Sarah has entered two live national cooking competitions, winning gold medals in each.

Winning the Award for Excellence in Mechanical Engineering Services was Grant Yates, also from Gunnislake. Grant, 19, found his plumbing course to be challenging but was determined to succeed. He is now progressing onto the next level and hopes to pursue his dream of living and working in Australia.

Christopher Hemmings, 18, from Tavistock, has been recognised as an outstanding and determined student who has not allowed his Aspergers Syndrome to hold him back. Christopher is active in all elements of student life at the college, and is the winner of two awards. He won the award for the Most Outstanding Care Student and the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Voice.

Harry Sharp was the winner of the Prince's Trust Award for Achievement. Harry, 17, from Tavistock, found meeting new people challenging but has embraced the Price's Trust team wholeheartedly.

He was unemployed when he began the programme and is now able to progress onto another course at the college, with the aim of gaining employment afterwards.
