Callington Amateur Drama Society are in rehearsals for their production of Why Me?, starting next week.

Performing at the Prim-Raf Theatre in Callington, the production deals in a humorous yet touching way with the problems of recession and mid-life redundancy, a theme relevant to today's climate.

A civil engineer battles against the odds to find a new job, and along the way has to cope with his wife's success in business, a drop-out son, an intrusive mother-in-law, and an increasingly attractive neighbour.

The comedy was first presented in the West End in 1985 with Richard Briers in the leading role.

Although dealing with a serious subject, and containing an adult theme, it is a bright and deftly observant play. Sometimes hilarious, with a touch of pathos, it is above all entertaining, showing that good comedy is inevitably tethered to the real world.

The performances will run at 7.30pm every evening from Wednesday May 19 to Saturday May 22. Tickets, £5, to include refreshments, are available from Noakes and Habermehl Opticians in Callington.
