THE favourite haunts of West Devon could soon be featuring in a unique new version of the family favourite game Monopoly, due to hit the shops this autumn.

'Moguls' from Winning Moves International Ltd have been polling people in towns throughout the region to find out which landmarks they would like to see on the new Devon version of Monopoly.

Last Friday, it was Tavistock's turn.

David Sommer, who has been touring the Dartmoor and West Devon area, said: 'We currently have 18 editions of Monopoly. The reason why Devon is getting it this year is because Cornwall had it last year, and because of this rivalry that seems to exist between the two.

'We have been all over the place, we have visited pubs, guest houses, we've spoken to local people about what they want to see on the board, from their perspective.'

David said he would like to hear about particular landmarks, towns, areas, organisations and businesses that really mean Devon to people who live here.

The Cornwall version of the game has Ginsters, for example. The coveted Mayfair slot is occupied by the Eden Project, while Looe Monkey Sanctuary is on the Old Kent Road square.

David said: 'We have to get the four train stations too. It's all about us gathering as much information as possible in order to create a board game that isn't something off our own bats, it's what the people of Devon want to be on there.

'The big one people want is Mayfair. We've had suggestions of Plymouth Hoe, Dartmoor and Exeter Cathedral.

'For the Old Kent Road, we've had the suggestion of Union Street in Plymouth.'

David said the four corners of the Monopoly board are always the same, whatever the edition, as are the playing pieces.

'When we did the Essex edition we had suggestions of a white stiletto for a playing piece, but we can't do that!' he said.

'We want a game where when you open the board, you see everything that represents Devon.'

David said he and his colleagues will continue to tour West Devon and Dartmoor in addition to other areas of the county for the next few days, gathering information.

He said: ' We don't want to leave out anything of real importance but unfortunately we only have a limited number of squares.

'So far, we haven't managed to upset too many people with any of the editions we've done.'

Monopoly is played in 26 different languages, including Welsh, and is sold in 80 different countries.

It was invented by heating engineer Charles B Darrow in Pennsylvania in the US in 1934.

He made so much money out of the game he never needed to work again and retired to spend his days growing orchids.
