OKEHAMPTON Otters were in action last weekend at the second weekend of the 2004 Devon Championships, this time the venue being Plymouth.

Eight swimmers had qualified for the weekend?s programme, competing in 13 events between them. Against talented opposition the Otters swimmers finished with four top six in age group positions and a further five in top ten slots.

Jenny Rice managed to achieve a second of championship Western Counties qualifying time in her 200m individual medley, finishing fifth in age group with her heat time of 2:35.79. Jenny swam to fifth position in her final.

Improving on her personal best Jenny created a new Otters age group record as well as breaking her own Otters club record.

In her second event of the weekend Jenny took sixth position in the women?s 17 years and over 50m butterfly, setting a new Otters age group record with her time of 32.49.

Ladies? club captain Rebecca Rowe also swam herself into Western Counties times, breaking her own personal best and establishing a new Otters age group record for the 100m backcrawl with her heat time of 1:13.99.

Fourteen year old Rebecca finished sixth in age group and sixth position in her final.

The Otters had two swimmers qualify for the 15 year old boys? 50m breastroke. Jan Jachnik finished seventh in age group and Paul Lawrence eleventh. Paul established a new personal best with his time of 38.75.

Jan also competed in the 200m breaststroke, finishing seventh in age group and establishing a new Otters age group record with his time of 2:57.01 and eighth in age group in the 50m backcrawl, again establishing a new Otters age group record with his time of 34.59.

Twelve year old Matthew Westlake swam his way into his third final of the championships, finishing in fourth place but third in age group in the 100m individual medley, setting a new personal best time of 1:19.40.

In the 14 years girls? 200m individual medley Vicky Medlyn finished a respectable ninth in age group, setting a new personal best time and new Otters age group record with 2:47.61.

Fourteen year old John Radnor finished in tenth place in age group in the boys? 100m butterfly event and Holly Dennis finished 13th in age group in the women?s 17 years and over 50m breaststroke competition..

This weekend six swimmers will have travelled to Plymouth for the final weekend of this year?s Devon County Championships.
