Marjons A 2

Tavistock 2

TAVISTOCK men's hockey team resumed their league matches on Saturday, following the month long mid-season break. A 5-1 victory over PGSOB vets on Thursday provided a useful warm-up game, but Tavistock found the fit and fast Marjons students tougher opposition.

Marjons took the lead after ten minutes when a concerted attack found the defence outnumbered.

A testing afternoon for Tavistock was compounded, when sweeper Kevin Lethbridge and right back Brian Rodda left the field with injuries. Replacement Phil Edwards made a telling contribution when his penalty corner was converted by Mark Turner to level the score.

Tavistock took the lead five minutes later when slick passing moves gave Nick Andrews a chance to score from close range.

Marjons replied with an excellent individual goal.

When Phil Edwards was forced to leave the pitch Tavistock played with two injured defenders for the rest of the match. The result was a damage limitation performance.

Tavistock's man of the match award went to keeper Martin Osborne for three fine saves in the second half, but excellent midfield performances from John Barrett and Mark Turner made this a difficult decision.

This weekend Tavistock play two league matches, the home leg of the West Devon derby against Okehampton on Saturday and Plymouth University B on Sunday. Both games start at 2.30pm at Bickleigh.

Tavistock 2nd XI 3

Camborne School of Mines 2

TAVISTOCK Seconds opened their account with a good goal from Chang on the right wing who placed his shot from an acute angle under the keeper.

The visitors attacked well, but the defence seemed in command until an error by one full-back gave an easy goal away.

Tavistock picked themselves up from this calamity and, with Newman, Rowe and Knox commanding the mid-field, further attacks were mounted until Rowe found Townsend on the top of the D. His goal-bound shot was touched in by Greenaway. Sadly a mis-hit by the other full back allowed Camborne to equalise.

The team dominated the second half with skipper Ralph unlucky to hit the post at close quarters. Townsend, who saw a number of shots miss the target, was the lucky recipient of a Ralph pass at the top of the D and put in the winning goal to round off a good overall performance by the team.
