Tamar League A division Lewdown Seconds v Ordulph WITH some main line bowlers missing Ordulph travelled to lowly Lewdown on Saturday with a rehashed opening bowling attack. If Ordulph thought it was going to be easy, Lewdown had other ideas. Smith was given the new ball and in conjunction with Langton both proceeded to make life difficult for the Lewdown openers Brown and Williams. With the early loss of Williams, Brown was joined by Martyn and a steady partnership began to blossom, although runs were not coming at any great pace. The Ordulph openers continued to bowl with great economy but with little luck on the wicket front. For the first time in an Ordulph shirt Melhuish was called into action with the ball and immediately had an impact removing Martyn caught and bowled while Sutton, from the top end, removed Brown. With this Lewdown partnership broken wickets began to tumble at regular intervals with Sutton in 'red hot form' doing most of the damage. With the assistance of Langton, who bowled with accuracy and pace for little reward, Sutton continued to take wickets as Lewdown were taken out for a modest 145. Sutton finished with a superb career best of 5 for 27 off 10. Good commitment in the field helped Ordulph's cause with good catches from Sharland and an exceptional 'day in the office' for keeper Wood with four catches. Ordulph openers Melhuish (42) and Sutton (20), with 50 on the board after eight overs, got their team off to a great start. Even with the loss of Sutton to a sharp Rob Squire (3 for 26) did not seem to dampen things with Ordulph passing 80 after 15 overs. Suddenly, though it all changed for Ordulph, with a brilliant sharp piece of fielding from Ollie Brown, Melhuish was run out by a direct hit going for an ill judged single. What happened next was an episode of batting madness from Ordulph as they capitulated by giving Lewdown what can only described as a session of catching practice —wicket after wicket tumbled in quick time. Lewdown sensing blood were 'on the ball' their fielding was superb with five catches, a stumping and another run out reducing Ordulph from 85 for 2, to all out for 123. Lewdown were as sharp in the field as the visitors were 'dull' with the bat, a well-deserved victory. Extra nets were booked for Ordulph next week, this is one Ordulph will need to forget quickly. Lewdown CC second XI won by 22 runs.
