LITTER pickers wearing bobble hats in the yellow and blue of the Ukrainian flag will be conducting a 24-hour litter pick around Tavistock over the Easter weekend, as community group Tidy Tavi stages Operation Bobble Hat.

The fundraiser runs from 12 noon on Easter Sunday (April 17) and until 12pm on Easter Monday, with volunteers wearing hats made by Lions club volunteers, who will be litter-picking.

Tidy Tavi will also have a presence on Bedford Square during the event where members wearing the disinctive yellow and blue hats, made by local volunteers,  will be shaking a bucket for anyone who would like to give cash donations. Donations can also be made online at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/24hrlitterpick.

Organiser Steve Hipsey said: ‘We’re calling it ‘Operation Bobble Hat’ as so many of the poor refugees emerging from that war-torn country seem to be wearing them. We’ll be working in pairs in three-hour shifts from midday on Sunday to midday on Monday throughout Tavistock.

‘We hope to visit most parts of the town and may even get out to surrounding villages if time permits. TASS is kindly letting us use The Anchorage as a base.

‘The project will raise funds for the refugees fleeing Ukraine via the Disasters Emergency Committee scheme while also giving the town a thorough clean up.’

The fundraiser follows a successful quiz staged by Tidy Tavi at the Stannary Arms with the help of the landlords which raised £1,600 for Ukraine.
