A CONSTANT stream of visitors toured Tavistock's Victorian town hall recently — despite atrocious weather conditions.
The open day was held by the town council as part of their best value duties — staff and councillors were on hand to answer questions and take visitors around the building.
Rosie Kehoe, deputy town clerk, said: 'It was the worst day of the year, the weather was absolutely foul, but from opening at 10am until we finally shut the doors at about 8.15pm there was a steady stream of visitors.
'Apart from one person, the main consensus was "It's there and we don't want to do without it".'
Mrs Kehoe said many good ideas came out of the open day, including a Tavistock ideal home exhibition, regular tea dances and gardening events.
'Another thing that came out was that not enough is made of it for tourists.
'I think what I am surprised and pleased about is the motivation, both of the committee I'm working with and the people,' said Mrs Kehoe.
She said visitors were taken all over the building, including the minstrel's gallery, the bar, kitchens — even the boiler room!
Results of the day plus the questionnaires which were included in a recent edition of the Times will be collated, with recommendations put to the council early next year.
