TAVISTOCK Community Sports Centre is celebrating 12 months of success serving the town — attracting more than 600 members since opening its doors.
Located at Tavistock College, the centre's facilities have hosted a variety of events throughout a successful year following the launch on November 9, 2009.
Barry Mountstevens, sports centre manager, said: 'The centre thrived when the Devon Youth Games took place here during the summer. Young people travelled from around the county to compete and it was a fun and enjoyable day for everyone.
'The third generation all-weather pitch has attracted several football teams to train and hold their games, leading to competitions including the Son-Rise Cup for Autism as well as our very own seven-a-side football league.'
Tavistock Community Sports Centre has also hosted fencing competitions, the Tavistock Half Marathon, short matt bowls tournaments, martial arts gradings, gymnastic contests, athletics and football qualification courses, as well as family days — giving the whole town a chance to make the most of the facilities.
The centre is open to all local people and offers classes including legs, bums and tums, pilates, cycle fit, box fit, circuits and zumba dance.
Mr Mountstevens continued: 'The growing number of people attending allowed us to put on new classes such as aqua fit, which took place in our heated swimming pool during the summer.
'Zumba has proven to be so successful we decided every Friday evening wasn't enough, so we introduced an extra session every Saturday morning too.'
The £3.2-million project includes a state of the art fitness suite, a sports hall complete with climbing wall and four badminton courts, an air conditioned dance studio, a competition-standard running track, an outside heated swimming pool and an all-weather pitch.
Mr Mountstevens added: 'The centre is proud to cater for a wide variety of sporting events and we would very much like to thank all members and anyone who has visited or used the facilities. Without your support the centre would not have been such a success.
'The growing involvement from local people has allowed us to make more plans for the future which we hope will continue to satisfy the needs of our community.'
