I WONDER why there are so few litter bins in Tavistock? Bill Bryson urges us all not to drop litter and also to pick up any we see. I and others do pick up other people's litter when we've got the time — but why do we then have to walk hundreds of yards to the nearest bin?

I noticed in a Romanian town, recently, that the main street had a litter bin every 20 yards. The street was spotless. It was not even a tourist town. Does litter matter? Well, not if you don't need shoppers and tourists . . .

While I think about it, is there anybody in Tavistock whose job has anything to do, however remotely, with a removal of the traffic cone stuck prominently in the canal opposite the Wharf.

It's been there for a long time and it does not enhance the view from the delightful cafe!

Perhaps you get letters like this every week. In which case, apologies!
