I AM in full support of the letter from Alex Mettler and our Tavistock historican Gerry Woodcock in Times' letters last week, on moving the war memorial to the church yard where it was supposed to be in 1921, but again due to finance it was placed in the cheaper second choice position.

Now leading up the centenary of the start of the First World War and in conjunction with the plans now being discussed by the Enhancement Group, let us make it happen.

The referendum carried out in 2001 covering the PL19 area, 86% agreed that it should be moved, so let us carry out those wishes. And to reassure those with relatives on the memorial and of other denominations, there are no restrictions to anyone to visit and reflect, in the quieter area of the churchyard, where it will be safe forever.

With the war memorial moved we can have more parking spaces, also spaces to be repainted giving more space in front of the court buildings to increase the pavement width to allow easier access, without losing valuable parking spaces which are so valuable to our town centre survival.

I WOULD like to use your letters section to express my outrage at the proposal to relocate the Tavistock war memorial to Bank Square.

As a 90+ year old Tavistockian I feel that it is an insult to the names of those fallen heros, some of whom were my school friends.

The debate that the road cannot be closed for a short period of time on Remembrance Sunday should refer to Goose Fair and the Boxing Day hunt when the road is closed for much longer.

If the war memorial has to be moved then the only location would be the the parish churchyard. But certainly not Bank Square.
