VIOLINISTS are being asked to look in their attics and cupboards for old instruments and spare parts to donate to musicians in Africa. The Tavistock branch of a Christian charity has already received a gift of six violins from a local restorer, but they need cases and bows to go with them. Ann Tregarthen, a helper with Operation Sunshine, said the charity hoped to send the complete instruments to Zambia in a 40ft shipping container due to leave Plymouth on February 3. 'We try to send as many musical instruments as we can,' she said. An electric church organ donated to the charity in Tavistock is now used in the cathedral at Iringa, Tanzania. Operation Sunshine raises money and ships donations to the poorest of the poor in Africa, ensuring that the goods reach their recipients effectively. Their latest shipment will include 'education boxes' donated by Roborough Rotary Club. Each box contains material to help 50 children. 'Educational material is so welcome,' said Mrs Tregarthen. 'Children in Africa just want to learn.' The charity would also like to hear from able-bodied young people who could help to load the container on February 3.
