A MAN who saw a photograph in the Times, taken when he was a schoolboy at Gulworthy School more than 70 years ago, returned to his old desk to rekindle memories sparked by the picture.

Peter Cocks, 78, who now lives in Bristol, was a pupil at the school from 1928-1933, while he lived at Morwellham.

He recently visited his sister, who lives in Tavistock, and their parents' graves in the Gulworthy graveyard and took the opportunity to have a look at the old school next door.

'When I visited my sister she said she had something for me and showed me the picture from the paper. I recognised the names and, of course, myself in the front row,' he said.

The headteacher was as interested in the school's history as Mr Cocks, quizzing him about changes in the school and the teachers who had taught him as a small boy.

Mr Cocks said: 'The school wasn't much changed since I was there all those years ago.'

After Gulworthy school Mr Cocks went to Dolvin Road School in Tavistock before going to work at the town's International store.

When the war came he joined the Gulworthy Home Guard before being called up to the RAF.

He returned briefly to the area after the war but was transferred away by International.
