Okehampton seconds 25
Tavistock seconds 6
PLAYING against a much stronger Tavistock seconds than earlier in the season, this game was a thrilling match.
Playing down the slope in the first half the Okes needed to get on the scoreboard early, but Tavistock had other ideas. Okehampton had the majority of the possession, but kept on losing the ball in contact. After 20 minutes they managed to keep the ball for several phases and Pete Herrod-Taylor glided through the Tavistock defence to score a try, which Dave Wills converted.
Tavistock battled back hard and were rewarded with a kickable penalty to finish the half 7-3 in the Okes' favour.
The Okes started the second half strongly and slick inter-passing by Matt Dennis led to star wing Phil Harding scoring the best try of the match. The Okes had to dig deep to keep the visitors from scoring and apart from Tavistock's kicking another penalty, they did. Okehampton were awarded a penalty and Luke Wonnacott scored to make it 12-6.
The Okes were on top now and were awarded a scrum near the Tavistock line and a superb eight-man drive saw number eight Sam Turner control the ball well to dive over for a try. Okes' captain Simon Griffiths rounded off another superb individual display by falling over the line to score.
With this excellent performance by the Okes this was a fitting way to securing the top spot on the merit table.
