Western Counties West
Okehampton 62
Newquay Hornets 3
IN this, the last home league game of the season, Oke cantered to victory in a one sided affair against a plucky, but ultimately outgunned, Newquay side. In truth, despite the score line, the Okes were for large parts under par and full of end of season lethargy.
The opening exchanges were evenly contested as the Cornish visitors, boasting a sizeable pack, made good use of their wind advantage to play large parts of the opening quarter in Oke territory.
It was the hosts who took the lead though as Rory Honeychurch scored after Oke created a huge overlap on the left. The conversion was missed and with Oke making too many handling errors, the visitors kicked a penalty to reduce the arrears. That was as good as it got for them though as they missed another chance soon after, before the Okes scored their second try through scrum half Richie Friend with a typical solo effort. Fly half Kevin Dennis converting.
Things soon got worse for the Hornets as their second row went down injured, and as they had travelled with only the bare 15, no replacement was forthcoming. Oke soon took advantage as fly half Kevin Dennis ran strongly for a solo score which he also converted to bring the interval score to 19-3 to the Okes.
It was looking ominous for the depleted visitors and the second half turned into a procession as the Okes upped their levels and the Newquay defence had no answer. The game became stretched and Oke put pace into their attacks. Firstly Alex Dennis crossed after supporting a Tom Mcratton break. Then winger Rob Fishleigh added a typical excellent solo winger's try after a neat kick ahead and regather. Replacement fly half Carl Poynton then cut through for a corner score to take the score to 38-3.
Tries were now coming with almost every attack, replacement prop Danny Carey rumbled over for another, quickly followed by Kev Dennis now playing on the wing; centre Tom Powell in the clubhouse corner and finally flanker Paul Lawrence. Successful conversions were shared between Kevin Dennis and Carl Poynton. With the score at 62-3, and still a quarter of an hour to go, the Newquay players had had enough, and so had the ref as he blew his whistle early to stop the carnage. Another five pointer for the Okes.
