FRIDAY May 31 saw Okehampton Bowling Club joined by friends from Hatherleigh taking to the road for their annual weekend tour, organised with his usual skill by J Mills.
The first match was against Richmond Park, Bournemouth and saw Okehampton, captained by D Thorpe, lose by 102 to 135 shots, with only rinks skipped by C Hutchings (24-17) and T Crispin (18-15) winning. The booby prize for the afternoon went to J Marles and his rink (9-31).
Saturday saw the tourists travelling to Salisbury for a game against Victoria Park. Okehampton, under captain of the day R Letchford, winning all six rinks, with a reversal of fortune for J Marles, as he led his rink to a 26-10 victory.
Booby prize winners, although winning 21-19, were the rink led by L Wonnacott.
Final score: Okehampton 140, Victoria Park 95.
Following a slight change of plans so that the England football game could be seen, the team under J Mills travelled to Ringwood only to be beaten by 5 shots (118 to 123).
Best result of the day was again the rink of J Marles who won 24-16, R Letchford's rink picking up the booby after going down 17-26.
Monday saw the party homeward-bound, stopping for a game at Feniton where in spite of good wins for the rinks of L Wonnacott (28-11) and captain of the day Jean Hutchings (26-16), Okehampton went down by two shots (124-126).
The final booby prizes of the tour went to the rink of P Wellman. Although winning only one game of the four played, everyone had an enjoyable tour.
J Mills and his wife were thanked for the time they spent organising the annual event.
Okehampton Simmons Bowling Club welcome new members at any time and are desperate to increase the strength of the ladies' section. So if you feel like trying the game of bowls come along on a Friday evening when you will receive a warm welcome.
