Christmas friendly Tavistock Colts 14 Okehampton Colts 25 TAVISTOCK Colts were at home to Okehampton on Saturday for a friendly local derby to help run off some of the Christmas festivities for the players in a match that was played in great spirit. Tavistock, playing against the wind in the first half, started well and pressured the Okehampton line, But Oke defended well and Tavistock failed to score from five metres out and came away with nothing for their efforts. This seemed to lift Okehampton's spirits and the pressure was now on Tavistock who struggled to clear their line against the wind and gave away the ball too easily. Okehampton were first to score with a well kicked penalty while Tavistock missed a chance with a penalty on the 22. Okehampton started to move the ball wide and with some good pace scored a good try out wide, which they duly converted to take the lead. Tavistock reshuffled their back line but failed to penetrate and missed tackles which let Okehampton in for another try before half -time bringing the score at the break to 15-0 to the visitors. Tavistock seemed to wake up in the second half and after reforming the back line to normal they had more purpose in their play. Mark Webber's sharp thinking with a tap penalty dived in from five metres to put Tavistock on the scoresheet. His effort was converted by Andrew Smerdon. Okehampton were not going to give up and replied with another try out wide which was converted well. Most of the second half was evenly matched with Okehampton Colts kicking another penalty and Tavistock coming back with a late try scored again by Webber and converted by Smerdon to bring the final score to 25-14. Chris Greatrix, the Tavistock coach was pleased with the effort put in by both teams. He told the Times: The match was played in great spirit. 'Tavistock Colts are a great bunch of lads, who are progressing well. Okehampton are a good side, with a pacy back line and a heavy and efficient front row. I would just like to say a big thank you on behalf of Tavistock Colts for the Oke boys for coming down for a match that was played in great spirit.' Pictures by James Bird
