A FORMER Tavistock College student was awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours List for her services to further education. Heather Maxwell, who also attended Bere Alston Primary School and whose mother Hilda Brimacombe still lives in the village, is the principal of South Devon College. Heather was the driving force behind South Devon College's move from rundown buildings in Torquay to a new campus in Paignton. Since her appointment as principal, the school has gone from strength to strength, significantly increasing participation rates in further and higher level education. Heather said being awarded the OBE was a 'huge honour' — for her personally and for South Devon College. 'It has been a privilege to have had the opportunity to lead the college over the past six years. 'I have enjoyed the support of very talented people who have contributed to the creation of a college of distinction for the people of South Devon and I would like to thank them for this special award.' Vince Flower, chairman of South Devon College, said: 'Everybody was delighted to hear the news of Heather's OBE. The award is richly deserved — we also believe the award is a credit to everybody associated with South Devon College who have helped and supported Heather in the task of turning round our inspirational college.' Heather has been teaching for 25 years. She has two children and two grandchildren and lives in Shaldon.
