KELLY College's music scholars have been hitting the right notes recently, both on the stage and in the classroom.

As part of Tavistock Music and Arts Festival, Kelly's musicians gave a lunchtime recital in the Abbey Chapel, Tavistock, to an appreciative audience. They played a programme, from Beethoven to Ballogh and Mozart to Faure.

Flautist Carys Twyman gave an assured performance of Sicilienne by Faure, followed by Gypsy Songs, played by Freddie Shere on alto saxophone.

Violinist Eric Yeung played one of the four Romantic Pieces by Dvorak before Bertie Jayarajah had the audience foot-tapping to the Boulevard Blues, which he played on the trumpet.

Sophie Whitfield sung a beautiful Beethoven song, from a poem by Goethe, and Beth Barnes rounded off the concert with the technically challenging Rondo from Mozart's Flute Concerto in G.

All the scholars were accompanied by director of music Andrew Wilson.

Eleven students also recently took their London College of Music examinations Many of the qualifications achieved, which varied from musical theatre to pop vocals, were in the upper end of the grade scale, meaning many students shone at Grade 7 and above.

Upper sixth former Betsy Kharas achieved a diploma in musical theatre.

Beth Barnes, Felicitas Rieder and Sophie Whitfield all achieved merits at grade 8 in musical theatre with Beth also receiving a distinction in grade 7 singing.

Chloe Barrow achieved grade 7 musical theatre, while Vicky Callow gained a merit in grade 8 pop vocals.

Two more distinctions were awarded in grade 5 musical theatre.

Jessica Lunn also sat grade 5 musical theatre and was rewarded with a merit. Madeleine Knight and Toby Coulton were the recipients of the final two distinctions. They were both awarded in musical theatre at grade 4 and grade 3.

Next for the college's musicians is Kelly's Summer Serenade evening on May 22.
