DevonTwo League North Tawton 0 Totnes 57 NORTH Tawton fielded another changed team on Saturday for this league match against a strong team from Totnes. The changes were evident when an early try was conceded to Totnes through Andy Rive. Although the conversion was missed the Tawton pack was soon under pressure and the three-quarter line also found themselves up against well-drilled opposition. A well executed move by the Totnes line created the gap for their full back Ollie Tregelles to run through for the first of what was to become a hat-trick of tries. This time the conversion was made by scrum half Mark Hooper, but shortly afterwards the try by John Gledhill was not converted and the score after about 20 minutes stood at 17-nil to Totnes. North Tawton pulled themselves back into the game and a brilliant tackle by Zak Matravers, covering across from the opposite wing, kept out another certain try. Soon after this Totnes were tempted to go for a penalty scrum, which was well defended by Tawton, and good work by full back Tom Davis helped to clear the home side's line. With the pressure mounting, Totnes were awarded another penalty and opted for the chip into touch for a lineout. This one was also cleaned up by Tawton and fly half David Fewings put in a good clearing kick. Totnes were not to be denied however, and another neatly planned three-quarter move made space for full back Tregelles to break through for his second try, converted by Hooper. North Tawton responded well, with a break by wing Ross Lawrence and some excellent driving and mauling by Mike Hewitt giving the home team some heart. Despite good tackling by Tawton's young centre pairing of Simon Quick and Chris Martin, the Totnes threes worked another outflanking move and their wing Ben Peters ran in another try before half time to take the score to 29-nil at the break. North Tawton made a spirited start to the second half, but Totnes re-established their dominance with a push-over try credited to number eight Adam Shore, and converted by Hooper. Tawton made some significant changes to their three-quarter alignment and for a period the match was evenly contested, but the superiority of the Totnes squad was shown by a charging try by prop Tim Woodward, taking his season's tally to 7 tries; the conversion by Hooper took the score to 43 –nil for the visitors. The next score by Totnes was a gem, with an audacious placing of the ball followed by a chip through and follow-up by replacement Jamie Townsend producing another try, despite some excellent covering work by Tawton's Ross Lawrence. The determined defence by North Tawton was typified by some good flanking play by Phil Elkins who disrupted a rolling move off the back of a Totnes scrum, but late injuries to two home team players reduced them to 13, having used all allowed replacements already. Almost inevitably Totnes broke through with a third try for Tregelles and the conversion by Mark Hooper, giving him a total of 12 points for the match, left the final score at 57-nil to Totnes. North Tawton showed good spirit in defeat, and the players appreciated the Christmas meal provided by Sarah Quick after the game. The next game at Taw Meadows will be the annual friendly match between North Tawton's football and rugby teams, an enjoyable social occasion uniting the sporting youngsters of the town.
