THE most famous player ever to pull on a Hatherleigh Town shirt returned to the market town last week to pass on some of his considerable footballing skills to youngsters at a youth training session. Norman Piper joined Hatherleigh in 1963 at the start of a football career before he went on to grace the professional game with Plymouth Argyle and Portsmouth. His attacking play and goal scoring talents saw him represent England at under-23 level. Norman is now involved in coaching in the USA, with the San Diego Nomads. He has been living in America for several years and also played with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and the Wichita Wings. The popular player returns to Britain occasionally to visit his family at North Tawton. Norman got a chance to see the new hardcourt floodlit football pitches at the recently opened Hatherleigh Community Centre when he dropped in on a youth training sessions just before Christmas. Hatherleigh were recently contacted by Albert Beer, the registration secretary for the North Devon League. Albert sent the club Norman's original registration form from 43 years ago — the only registration form he ever kept from the thousands that he processed. The club presented Norman with his registration form before the first team match against St Martins on the Saturday before Christmas.
