Okehampton U16s 10

Crediton hosted Okehampton U 16s in the league at North Tawton due to waterlogged home pitches. This match marked the inaugural 'Stocking Cup'.

This cup was donated this season by Mr and Mrs Stocking in memory of their son  Stuart who played for Okehampton Youth in the 1990s.

His coach Barry Gee remembers an enthusiastic young rugby player playing in the back row usually at number eight who embraced all that rugby can offer. This entertaining match provided a fitting encounter for the first 'Stocking Cup'.

Crediton had the best of the first half, spending long periods in Okes's half. Their wing forwards Rob Somerwell and Ben Phillips stole most of the second phase ball on offer and Ben Woolacott at number eight made good yardage with the ball.

Turnover ball was moved quickly to the backs but Okehampton's midfield of Henry Cooper and Matt Johns held firm. Okehampton halfbacks Tom Wilkins and Sam Vincent had a good match despite the attentions of the Crediton back row.

Crediton had some promising runs in their backs but knock ons and forward passes prevented tries. The only score of the half was a penalty by Lawrence Stone of Okehampton.

Playing down the hill the Okes improved their game and twice were stopped short of the line. Tackling from both sides was superb along with good driving play from the forwards. Tom Elliott had an excellent match in the second row for the Okes. Play moved from end to end with strong defences preventing scores. Crediton were finally rewarded with quick turnover scrum ball allowing Ben Woolacott to drive over for an unconverted try.

At 3-5 down and less than 10 minutes remaining the match was set for a frantic finish. After a series of plays close to Crediton's line Stone crashed over for a converted try and Okehampton held the lead for the win.

Crediton won the cup with a good lead from the opening match and were  presented with the first 'Stocking Cup.'

Okehampton play at home to Torrington in the Landscape League next Sunday.
