RE: ?Town lunch club has reached end of road after 11 years (Okehampton Times, February 26).

Okehampton District Community Transport Group (ODCTG) read with dismay that one of the reasons the chief officer of Age Concern, Barrie Duke, cited for the closure of the lunch club was ?rising transport costs?.

We were very surprised that this was given as a contributory factor as the charges for those members using our transport have not risen since December 1, 2001.

The Community Car service, which has provided transport for some of the members of the lunch club is a non profit making charity, and charges are kept to a minimum. The charges received are subsequently passed onto our volunteer drivers in the form of a mileage allowance.

We would like to add that our two drivers have been providing this service each Monday since January 1992 and we would like to express our gratitude to them for their dedication in doing such a splendid job.

We do hope this clarifies our position regarding this matter.
