Western Counties West
Tavistock 15
Wadebridge 29
TAVISTOCK kicked off with the slope and a good chase resulted in the home side retaining possession and going on to the offensive.
However Wadebridge held firm and with a huge advantage in the front row, almost four stone a man, they were able to turn over the Tavistock ball and launch their attacks, these initial forays were ably dealt with by the Tavistock defence.
In the fifth minute, Wadebridge launched another attack and with the full back joining the line at pace were able to breach the defence and score wide out on the left, the conversion was missed.
Tavistock came straight back with some excellent loose play gaining a scrum in the Wadebridge half; with the front row working really well, a slight wheel gave Jake Phillips the space, sell an outrageous dummy, draw the full back and feed out to Andrew Moy to dive over for a try.
The half continued with both sides playing some good rugby, but one lapse in the Tavistock defence allowed the Camels' full back to barge his way through for a try in the corner which was converted.
The second half started and Wadebridge were soon into their stride; a good series of drives resulted in a simple penalty from in front of the posts.
Tavistock came right back and had their own series of drives with Andy Hunt to the fore, but Wadebridge turned over the ball and a hack and chase was only snuffed out by excellent defence from Mark Hennesy. The ball was cleared and from the resulting line out, Duncan Law turned over the ball, quick feed to Doug Lloyd who jinxed his way through the Wadebridge defence, a pass to Andy Wright who just managed to dive under the covering tacklers to score in the corner.
More pressure from Tavistock took play up to the Wadebridge line, but a dropped pass, hacked through and the Wadebridge winger just managed to win the race to touch down in the corner, again the conversion was successful.
Tavistock continued to press but again caught on the counter and Wadebridge were through for another converted try. Tavistock were still working hard and eventually were rewarded with debut winger Andy Astley squeezing in at the corner on the stroke of full time.
Tavistock can take a lot from this game, much more passion and commitment, something to build on for next week.
