FREE carrier bags will no longer be available at Tavistock's Spar Shop in Abbey Place, from March 1. Instead, larger thicker re-usable bags can be bought for 10p each, in order to cut down on the amount of carrier bags used — with every 10p taken during March going to St Luke's Hospice. Mary Matthews, manager of the shop, said: 'Some of the Spar shops are already doing this and I think this decision is a step in the right direction. 'We don't want to lose customers — but at the same time we are aware of the ecological problems carrier bags cause.' Eco-friendly Jute shopping bags will also be available to buy at the shop for £1.99.
