Cornwall Junior Cup Eastern section, final Gunnislake 1 St Dennis 2 THESE two Duchy Premier league teams played out an entertaining, tight and well contested encounter in difficult conditions as the rain poured down from start to finish. But the Bodmin Town pitch held up well thanks to the efforts of the club's groundsman. Gunnislake had the better of the first half and could have gone in with more than their one goal lead. From the left Gunnislake's Stuart Wakenshaw flashed a couple of cross come shots across the area that caused panic in the Saints defence and Stef Kelly was a constant threat down the right. The ceaseless running and work of Gunnislake strikers Jarryd Kelly and Nathan Dore made it an uncomfortable time for the Saints central defenders. Gunnislake's attacking threat stemmed from a solid back line. Keeper Andy Brenton controlled his penalty area and consistently kicked well whilst well guarded by a back four of Steve Cribb, Paul Heath, John Styring and Mark Warwick. In the midfield battle Gunnislake's Dave Henwood and Neil Kinger kept on top. The goal came when Dore pounced on hesitancy in the Saints defence to score from close range. Soon after Stef Kelly found the net only for his effort to be ruled out for an earlier infringement. Dore had a great chance to extend Gunnislake's lead early in the second period but fired straight at the keeper from some 10 yards. As the second half wore on Saints had more of the ball but were finding it difficult to break Gunnislake down until they scored on 70 minutes in a fortuitous manner. Under pressure Brenton's clearance struck the back of a Saints player and looped over the keeper and into the net. With their tails up Saints soon produced a good effort that Brenton brilliantly saved. Withheld a few minutes Gunnislake earned themselves a corner; ironically this proved their downfall as Saints cleared the centre and broke swiftly to score with a well worked goal. The final 10 minutes saw the match switch from end to end. Wayne Mousalli, who with Pete Styring and Ashley Dobson had been introduced, had an effort that clipped the top of the cross bar and with this Gunnislake's chances of forcing extra time went. Gunnislake Football Club expressed their thanks to the Cornwall FA, the match officials and Bodmin Town Football Club for staging this encounter. l After a yet another washout over the past weekend both Gunnislake's teams are in cup action this weekend in Duchy league competitions. The reserves travel to Boscastle for a reserve cup match and the Premier team visit Dobwalls for a cup fixture. Both games kick off at 2 pm.
