PLANNERS have refused an application to install a cash machine on the shop front of Martin?s Newsagents in Okehampton because of the visual impact. The proposal was recommended for approval by planning officers who considered it would be visually unobtrusive and that the proposed materials would be consistent with the contemporary design and appearance of the shop frontage. But Okehampton Town Council raised concerns regarding the potential crime risk associated with the proposed cash machine. It also objected on the grounds of detrimental visual impact, a concern that was shared by members of West Devon Borough Council?s planning committee which said it failed to preserve or enhance the character of the conservation area.
