South West Peninsula League Exmouth Town 1 Okehampton Argyle 0 EXMOUTH, holding a healthy position third from top of the league, struggled to come to terms with a dogged perfomance by Argyle and resorted to belting the ball up field at every opportunity. Argyle played the better football throughout, but unfortunately came away with nothing to show for their efforts. Exmouth scored the only goal of the afternoon when a lofted ball was played over the centre of the Argyle defence and their striker got goal side to take a clean volley, finishing excellently by finding the corner of the Argyle net. Argyle responded well and played some attractive football, with Steve Williams' pace causing themn problems all afternoon. With a little better pacing Argyle might have been level on 25 minutes when Williams blasted the ball wide. Michael Vernon tested the Exmouth keeper with a powerful strike from 35 yards. The keeper could only parry the ball and the follow up again went wide of the target. Robbie Miller also went close on a couple of occasions and Exmouth were fortunate to be in the lead at the interval. Argyle came out in the second half and piled the pressure on Exmouth, forcing corners and free-kicks in the early exchanges. A well worked set piece flashed past the upright when Stuart Cann played the ball to Steve Kinsey and took the return pass. Football can be a cruel game and this was a classic example of the better team losing on the day, but Argyle should take a lot of credit from the game when they travel to Galmpton on December 29.
