ELEVEN young hopefuls attended the selection evening in Tavistock last week, to find this year?s carnival Princess and attendants. Announcing the results, incoming Lions Club president Jeff Lea said that it had been a very difficult decision to make and he thanked all the girls for taking part, the Times for publishing the entry form and sponsor Lawsons for their continued support. The new princess will be nine year old Laurel Northmore from Buckland Monachorum ? the two attendants will be nine year old Lily Hillson, also from Buckland Monachorum, and eight year old Mariah Calvert from Tavistock. The competition judges were Sue Taylor and Sarah Ferry, both from Lawsons of Tavistock, and Jeff Lea. Laurel will be crowned during the Fun in the Meadows day on Sunday July 15 and she and her attendants will attend various events during the week before leading the carnival parade on Saturday July 21, the theme for which is music. A full week of events is in the final stages of planning and will be announced in the near future. Following their successful involvement in last year?s carnival, George Wimpey, which is building homes at Manor Grove in Tavistock, has once again agreed to be the main sponsor of carnival week, which starts on Saturday July 14 with highly popular Jazz at Harford Bridge.
