TAVISTOCK'S new Contemporary Art Gallery in Paddon's Row saw people flock to its grand opening last Saturday, including an internationally renowned photographer.

The artists and curators of the gallery, Jules Greaves and Laura Hopes, were thrilled with the positive feedback they received from the public on the day, and also to be visited by photographer David Bailey, who visited with his wife and daughter.

Last Friday the gallery held a private viewing, attended by the Mayor of Tavistock David Whitcomb and David Balment, the owner of the premises who has kindly supported the venture.

On display is a variety of work by seven different artists: Jules Greaves creates abstract works in mixed media alongside installation pieces, while Laura Hopes' landscape paintings are abstracted elongations of Dartmoor and the sea.

Etchings, lithographs and screen prints by Lynn Hatzius, who recently exhibited in London, are hung alongside photos examining the role of Israel as a holiday destination during the Intifada by the award-winning photographer Leonie Purchas.

Also being screened is 'Possessed' the award-winning film by Martin Hampton documenting four sufferers of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and their relationship with their belongings.

In the lower gallery the whimsical ceramics of Jenny George hang alongside the prints of Juliet Middleton-Batts, whose work is inspired by leaves, undergrowth and the play of light and shadow.

Jules and Laura were thrilled to be visited by Mr Bailey, who wished them good luck with their venture and commented favourably on the exhibits, in particular the photos of Leonie Purchas.

Jules and Laura will be rehanging the space within a month and showcasing other artists.

Laura said: 'Our aim is to become a focal point for the work of contemporary artists and makers, as it has been proven that there is a need for an outlet of this type.

'We will constantly update and change our exhibits and keep it a current and fluid forum for contemporary art.'
