TAVISTOCK College is introducing an experienced and enthusiastic new team to head up next year's sixth form.

Former assistant director of sixth form Ian Barnes will take the lead, with product design teacher Pete Keegan as deputy.

Mr Barnes said: 'I am very proud of the reputation of the sixth form in the local community which has been deservedly built over many years.

'I am keen to build on the good practice which has led to our students' record of success.'

Mr Barnes said he was absolutely delighted with the appointment of Pete Keegan, who would bring inspirational skills and organisation.

Mr Keegan, who will also be head of Year 12, said: 'These are very exciting times for me and the sixth form. I hope to further develop and enhance the culture for learning and success within the sixth form and bring it closer to the Tavistock community.

'We will help our sixth formers become positive role models for younger students, be successful in their studies and knowledgeable about the wider world they will soon step into.'

The team is completed by learning mentor Odette McCarthy and administrators Lorraine Northmore and Lisa Mabey.

Director of sixth form Phil Mathieson is stepping down from the role to concentrate on his work as an assistant principal, focusing on pastoral services.

Ian Barnes said the sixth form was working with the Devon and Cornwall Business Council to introduce a new employability award for students.

'It will recognise the skills and qualities our students develop which enable them to have the attributes employers value.

'We are looking to offer Open University courses so our most able students can access degree modules alongside A-levels and we are enhancing our support for students through a co-tutoring system so we cater to all abilities.

'I have been absolutely bowled over by the response from the students to the new team. Working with students as they make the transition to university and careers is a real privilege and one which I have hugely enjoyed for the last 18 years at Tavistock College under Phil Mathieson and his predecessor Geoff Orton.'
