A NEW interpretation board was last week unveiled at the Old Bedford Foundry in Tavistock, explaining more than 150 years of the site's varied history. The building was a key component in Tavistock's mining industry for 24 years, before it was taken over by Morris Brothers Funeral Directors in 1970. The building formerly housed the Bedford Foundry, which flourished in the mining boom of the mid 19th century. The Foundry was run from the site from 1844 until 1868, when it transferred to the Tavistock Iron Works in Parkwood Road. Director of Morris Brothers Ltd Simon Luke, who organised the setting up of the board, said: 'We own the building and we were told that it was most important and helped gain the World Heritage Bid. 'We wanted to set up this board in order to give people an explanation of the building's history and what it used to be.'
