DESPITE extensive renewal and decorating of the United Reformed Church in Tavistock, the popular Art4fuN classes are still taking place and started up last week for the beginning of its fifth year. Classes are held every Tuesday and Friday morning from 9.30am. Thelma Newell has been instructing and advising throughout the four years and has had almost 30 students, of all ages and stages. She will soon be turning 85 but is still encouraged to continue by her students, who attend in their two's, three's or eight's depending upon their availability, with a 'pay as you go' fee, with the first session free. Thelma originally trained at Bournemouth College where her colleagues included John Ward RA of 'Vogue' fame and Freddie Yates, the famous Cornish artist. She later transferred to Salisbury Art College where she studied pottery and embroidery. She has been a member of Drawn to the Valley and is presently a member of the Tavistock Group of Artists.
