FINALS day dawned hot and sunny at Yelverton Tennis Club and all the competitors must be congratulated on their stamina in extreme heat. The tournament had been running for two months. The Spreadbury family were represented in all but one of the finals but only had success in one - Fiona beating Wendy Sharland 6-2, 6-3 in the ladies? singles. This was a long match with lots of rallies. In the men?s singles Chris Spreadbury played club chairman John Marshall. John won the first set, Chris the second and John the third 6-2. In the men?s doubles final Ray Spreadbury and Charles Hattersley were beaten by club captain Phil Gashe and Peter Smith. The ladies? doubles final was between Jenny Kay and Mary Downey and Mags Berry and Nicole Brent - a new member. Mags and Nicole, not having played tennis together before the final, joined forces when their respective partners had to withdraw at the last minute, Jenny and Mary having played two previous rounds. In a closely fought match Mags and Nicole, having been 2-5 down in the first set, came back to win a tie break, but Jenny and Mary clinched the final two sets 6-2, 7-5. This was an excellent match for the spectators as the lead went from end to end. In the mixed doubles Jenny Kay and Chris Spreadbury played Helen Smith and new member Andy Brent. This was also a closely contested match which unfortunately had to be started early because of some players? involvement in other matches, and so some spectators missed out on some competitive tennis. Helen and Andy were winners 6-2, 6-7, 6-1. Chairman John Marshall presented the trophies and commented on how good it was for the club when new members entered the tournaments and got through to the finals! A buffet tea, with wine, was provided by committee members. Thanks were expressed to Mary Downey who with Joy Tynan organised the tournament. Joy thanked all members who supported her in her trek in Tanzania to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. The friendly match against Tavistock was unable to be completed because of an injury to Peter Barry during the match.
