LOCAL artists set up stalls for the first time at Tavistock's new arts market last Saturday.

The market featured 14 stalls with local artists selling everything from paintings and textiles to ceramics. Visitors to the market had the chance to talk to them about their work, buy unique items or request a commissioned piece.

The market will run on the third Saturday of every month, in the car park at Bank Square, Market Street. The next arts market is scheduled for August 20.

The borough council has worked with the town's chamber of commerce, local businesses and the town council to research and coordinate the arts market, as well as donating the use of the car park free of charge to host the event.

Cllr Robert Oxborough, chairman of West Devon Borough Council's environment and community committee said: 'This new market was a great success and there has been some very favourable feedback from the stall holders who are looking forward to the next market in August.

'Despite the poor weather, Bank Square was busier than a normal Saturday and this was exactly the aim of the new market.

'We look forward to its popularity increasing as awareness about this event grows.'

Artists wishing to book a stall for future dates should contact local artist Tessa Clarke, who has taken the lead on this project, by emailing her at [email protected]">[email protected] or contact her at the market.
