A?WEST?Devon arts centre has recently given a new look to its Rock and Blues Open Mic night, held on the first Thursday of every month from 8pm.

The evening is now being hosted at the Wharf in?Tavistock by The Avatars, a six-piece band fronted by Nuala McDermott.

Mike Neenan, the band's lead guitarist and founder member, said: 'Our aim is to encourage local talented musicians to perform on a professional stage with incredible sound and lighting facilities.

'We also want to bring in more varied types of music, and not be limited to just rock and blues.'  

The Avatars play a wide range of music, from country and rockabilly to Celtic Jigs, 70s classics and chart hits. Musicians are welcome to play either on their own or with others, or they're to come on stage with the Avatars and jam along.

'The main thing is to make the evening fun and enjoyable for musicians and audience alike', said Mike. 'There are some incredibly talented musicians around, and we're offering a unique opportunity to showcase their talent on the Wharf's wonderful stage.'

The next music night is on May 5, entrance £3.50.
